Pack as storefront

Bicycle Brand Extra Small Lima Beans can label

commons.wikimedia.orgarchive-open-access

The pattern

This still is filed under Pack as storefront.

Define

The pack is the store. On a shelf or a thumbnail, it must stop, name, and close without a clerk.

Mechanism

Shelf rhetoric. Hierarchy, claim, and proof live on the face. The first five centimeters do the campaign's job.

Verdict

The buy happens in a glance among competitors: grocery, pharmacy, app store icon.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The brand name has nothing to do with the food, which is the point: in a shelf of peas and beans differentiated only by grade, an irrelevant but vivid name buys recall and lets the packer sell the same crop under several marks. The lettering does the positioning before the picture does, because the ornate script and drop shadow read as modern novelty while the product name underneath stays in plain heavy display caps so the shopper can still find the vegetable. The bicycle motif is then repeated three times at three scales, hero vignette, wreathed roundel, distant lane, which is how a name with no product logic gets fixed in memory. Unlike its sibling labels this one leaves the purity line unboxed in the top corner, which is a weaker placement and shows how much the white roundel was doing on the pea labels.

Steal this when

Steal this when one producer needs several brands off the same production line and the names cannot be about the product itself. Pick one borrowed icon, repeat it at three scales in the layout, and keep the plain descriptive product name in the heaviest type so the recall device never costs you findability.
