Pack as storefront

Apothekersetiket voor bessensap

rijksmuseum.nlopen-licence

The pattern

This still is filed under Pack as storefront.

Define

The pack is the store. On a shelf or a thumbnail, it must stop, name, and close without a clerk.

Mechanism

Shelf rhetoric. Hierarchy, claim, and proof live on the face. The first five centimeters do the campaign's job.

Verdict

The buy happens in a glance among competitors: grocery, pharmacy, app store icon.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The label carries no product claim at all, and that is the decision that makes it work: for a compounded pharmacy line the pharmacist's name is the brand and the contents are generic, so the design spends its entire budget on making the name and the address unforgettable. Two inks plus a flat tint panel give three tonal values, enough to separate standing information from variable information without a third press run. The centre field is deliberately oversized for the word, so even a short product name still fills the label, which is how one plate serves a whole range.

Steal this when

Steal this when the product itself is undifferentiated and the seller's name is the only asset worth spending ink on. Steal the oversized empty centre when one template must carry product names of very different lengths.
