Pack as storefront

Affiche voor Delftsche Slaolie

The pattern

This still is filed under Pack as storefront.

Define

The pack is the store. On a shelf or a thumbnail, it must stop, name, and close without a clerk.

Mechanism

Shelf rhetoric. Hierarchy, claim, and proof live on the face. The first five centimeters do the campaign's job.

Verdict

The buy happens in a glance among competitors: grocery, pharmacy, app store icon.

Why it works

Everything is subtraction. The ornament is reserved as light strokes from a black block so it recedes behind the object, and the only saturated hue on the sheet, the yellow of the oil, is placed at the exact optical centre with nothing to compete with it. Because the ornament is symmetrical and the bottle is a hard vertical, the eye has nowhere else to rest. The copy is not written for the poster at all: the real shelf label is reproduced at legible size, so the sheet trains the shopper on the exact object she must find in the shop, and the poster and the pack become the same recognition asset.

Steal this when

The pack is the recognition asset and the category is otherwise undifferentiated: oil, spirits, tinned goods, a supplement. Kill every competing element, centre the pack on a dark ground, and let the real label carry the words so the poster teaches the shelf.
