Lettered cover hook

The white wampum, by E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake) - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Read the pattern

Why it works

The lettering is the positioning. The hand-cut angular capitals read as carved rather than typeset, so the whole sheet takes its character from the subject before a word is understood, and printing the author's Mohawk name directly under her English one on a commercial bill in the 1890s makes identity the selling proposition rather than a footnote. The figure's skin is the untouched red ground, which fuses her with the field and saves an ink at the same time. Sold Here closes it as a dealer instruction, turning an art poster into point-of-sale.

Steal this when

Use this when the author or founder's identity is the differentiator and the work itself is hard to sample. Let the lettering carry the cultural register, put the identifying name on the face at full size, and finish with a plain availability line so the poster still does retail work.
