Why it works
The composition is a picture inside a pattern, and the two are printed in the same two inks reversed, black on pink in the centre and pink on black around it. That reversal makes the small inset glow without adding a colour. The masthead is split, THE above the figure and ECHO under it, which locks the title to the figure as one unit and makes the reader read through the image. The all-over interlace has no focal point of its own, so every part of it pushes the eye back to the one rectangle that does.
Steal this when
Use this when you want a small central element to feel lit from inside without spending an extra colour. Surround it with a dense all-over texture in the same two inks and reverse the values between the field and the inset.
