The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

Everything perishable has been left off - no play title, no theatre, no dates - so the sheet can be reprinted and posted for any engagement of her career, which is why this design outlived the season. The frame is the argument: masks, laurel and classical drapery file her under serious drama before the viewer reads a word. The face is rendered photographically while every surrounding element is flattened into decorative pattern, so the eye lands on the likeness first and the ornament reads as a setting rather than as competition.

Steal this when

Use when the person is the brand and the offer changes constantly - a performer, an author, a consultant with rotating engagements. Strip the dated specifics off the main asset and hold them on a separate overprinted or attached piece.
