The echo, for sale here (1896) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
This is a recognition device rather than a persuasion piece. It reproduces the cover at glance-size so a customer matches the card to the copies stacked on the counter, which means the card does not have to argue anything. The enormous unprinted margin is what makes a small image carry across a shop, and the single line of copy is the only instruction a point-of-sale card can afford. Printing just the initial letters in red picks the line out of the blank field without adding a second typeface or a second weight.
Steal this when
Use this when your advertising already has a recognised image and the only job left is location: strip everything back to that image plus a three-word availability line. Right for retail cards, shelf talkers and stockist posters where the buying decision was already made elsewhere.
