The century for April (1895) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Issue-as-product mood sell.
Define
The issue is sold as a feeling: a face, a color field, a stance. Not as a table of contents.
Mechanism
Mood as SKU. The reader buys the atmosphere and trusts the articles will match. Zoning and figure do the listing's job.
Verdict
We publish a periodical or drop and the buyer chooses identity before they choose an article.
Why it works
The poster is a contents page promoted to the status of artwork: the type column is ranged centre and sized by how much each item will sell, so Napoleon's campaign and Tesla's new oscillator get display sizes while the rest steps down into fine print. That size ladder lets a passer-by take the two strongest items at distance and read the depth only if they come closer. The decorative figure carries no product meaning at all - its job is to signal taste and buy attention, while the entire argument lives in the type. Naming Tesla, Mark Twain and Jefferson in one block borrows four reputations for the price of one issue.
Steal this when
Use this when an issue, an event or a bundle wins on lineup rather than on a single claim. Rank the contents by pulling power, set them in a descending size ladder, and let one decorative image buy the attention the list then cashes.
