Collier's, the national weekly, containing Outdoor America (1909) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Issue-as-product mood sell.
Define
The issue is sold as a feeling: a face, a color field, a stance. Not as a table of contents.
Mechanism
Mood as SKU. The reader buys the atmosphere and trusts the articles will match. Zoning and figure do the listing's job.
Verdict
We publish a periodical or drop and the buyer chooses identity before they choose an article.
Why it works
The figure is the contents list. A woman in riding kit with a crop says Outdoor America faster than the orange lettering beside her does, so the illustration argues rather than decorates. Penfield lets the figure break the logotype, which welds picture and title into one object instead of a banner with art underneath, and it is the overlap that makes the sheet read as a poster rather than a cover. The right-hand column is then set as a ladder of four unrelated promises, each with the name of the person who wrote it, so a buyer scanning a crowded news-stand gets four separate chances to be hooked instead of one.
Steal this when
Use this when one issue, bundle or drop holds several unrelated items and no single one can carry the sale on its own. Put a figure that embodies the theme in the centre, let it break the masthead, and run the items down one side as a ranked ladder with the maker's name under each.
