Iconic figure claim

To Klondike - Colman's Mustard - poster

commons.wikimedia.orgpublic-domain-us

The pattern

This still is filed under Iconic figure claim.

Define

A single figure, drawn, silhouetted, or posed, is the whole claim. You can read it across a street.

Mechanism

Compression into a body. The figure is not decoration. It is the sentence. Distance-legibility is the test.

Verdict

Poster scale, outdoor, packaging at a glance

Why it works

The whole advertisement is one substitution: the fire is missing, the product occupies its place, and the reader completes the claim that mustard is heat without a line of copy ever making it. Hassall paints everything else cold and desaturated and reserves saturated yellow and red for the packet and the muffler, so the tin is the only warm thing on a sheet of snow and the colour argument runs parallel to the joke. Hooking onto the Klondike gold rush borrows a story already running in every paper that year, which buys attention the brand did not have to build. Painting the pack at full label detail means the gag doubles as recognition training for the grocer's shelf.

Steal this when

Use this when the product has one sensory property that can be staged as an absurd substitute for something else, such as heat, cold, speed or light. Put the product where the expected object belongs, drain the colour from everything around it, and let the reader make the claim for you.
