The poster (1896) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Iconic figure claim.
Define
A single figure, drawn, silhouetted, or posed, is the whole claim. You can read it across a street.
Mechanism
Compression into a body. The figure is not decoration. It is the sentence. Distance-legibility is the test.
Verdict
Poster scale, outdoor, packaging at a glance
Why it works
The title is the only copy, which forces the design to carry the entire argument, and the design proves the product category by example. Bird keeps one hue and varies only its density, patterned red against flat red, so the eye reads depth without a second colour. The robe is drawn as a single unbroken contour that runs from the top-right portfolio down to the bottom-left corner, which gives a static seated scene a diagonal sweep and stops the flat colour going dead. Cream letters reversed out of the busiest part of the field is a deliberate risk, held together by the weight of the slab face and the black border containing everything.
Steal this when
Your product is craft or taste itself and any explanatory copy would weaken the claim, so the artefact has to be the sample. Also when you have one brand colour and need to build a whole layout from its values rather than adding a palette.
