Iconic figure claim

The Ault & Wiborg Co - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Iconic figure claim.

Define

A single figure, drawn, silhouetted, or posed, is the whole claim. You can read it across a street.

Mechanism

Compression into a body. The figure is not decoration. It is the sentence. Distance-legibility is the test.

Verdict

Poster scale, outdoor, packaging at a glance

Why it works

Every element is chosen to stress the ink rather than to describe the company. The near-solid dark ground tests a heavy flat lay-down, the reserved white figure tests the edge sharpness of that solid, and the scattered orange and yellow blossoms test register and small-area colour, so one image runs three different press problems at once. The figure is drawn as a reversed silhouette with no internal modelling, which means the drawing costs nothing extra to print and reads instantly at a distance. Alternating orange initials inside otherwise green lines is a typographic trick that makes a two-colour headline look like a much bigger colour job. The colour-number line at the foot converts the whole aesthetic performance into a purchase order.

Steal this when

Use this when you sell a component and can make the advertisement a live test of it. Design the image so it stresses several performance dimensions at once, keep the copy to the company name and trade, and end with the exact codes needed to order what the buyer just saw.
