Why it works
Value, not line, organises the picture: the central figure is cut in heavy solids, the crowd in fine crosshatch and the skull bank in near-white, so a single figure reads instantly from a distance out of a field of a hundred competing ones. The radiating lines behind the skull are a cheap, purely graphic halo that fixes the focal point without any perspective or ground plane. Pulled without its type, the block shows how completely Posada designed for reduction and cheap paper - every shape is closed, thick and tolerant of bad inking. Stripped of the verse, the same image reads as a crowd portrait rather than a joke, which is how much the letterpress line was doing.
Steal this when
Look at this when you need one figure to survive inside a busy, detailed image - a packed illustration, a crowd scene, a dense hero graphic - and the fix is tonal separation plus a radiating device, not more detail. Also useful as evidence when arguing that an image and its caption are doing separable jobs.
