Why it works
The composition is a light box: two dark verticals clamp a pale channel, so the eye is driven to the centre before any form has been identified. Scale rather than detail carries the meaning - the standing figure is several times the height of anything in the lower strip, which reads instantly as deliverance without needing a caption. The bottom register is deliberately kept flat and map-like so it registers as a place beneath the figure rather than a scene the figure stands in. Because the paint is thin and the drawing unresolved, the sheet is functioning purely as a colour-and-mass decision, with lettering left to be fitted once the value structure has been approved.
Steal this when
Use this at the stage where a cover's composition is being decided and type would only disguise a weak structure - block in the value pattern first and leave the title out entirely. The clamped-light-channel device is worth stealing whenever one figure has to dominate a busy field.
