Why it works
The composition inverts the expected hierarchy - the subject is the drabbest element, framed by two saturated flanking figures - and that inversion is the idea: this is the man himself rather than the monument. Frontal advance toward the viewer, with all three horses cut off at the chest by the bottom edge, gives a sense of the group arriving in the reader's space, which is what a display piece needs at close range. The technique keeps whole areas unworked so the colour patches read cleanly instead of muddying.
Steal this when
You are selling a biography, a documentary, a profile or a rebrand where the promise is the unfamiliar view of a familiar figure - stage the subject plainly and let the surroundings carry the spectacle. Also useful when a piece must survive without a headline: build the composition so the arrangement alone states the argument.
