Iconic figure claim

Le Frou-Frou (humor magazine) - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Iconic figure claim.

Define

A single figure, drawn, silhouetted, or posed, is the whole claim. You can read it across a street.

Mechanism

Compression into a body. The figure is not decoration. It is the sentence. Distance-legibility is the test.

Verdict

Poster scale, outdoor, packaging at a glance

Why it works

Figure-ground reduction: one silhouette on one saturated flat colour, no background information competing for the eye, so the poster resolves at fifty metres before anyone reads a word. The product is placed at the very top of the composition in her raised hand, which means the eye that follows the kick upward lands on the masthead. The title is hand-lettered rather than typeset so the letters move on the same diagonal as the skirt and read as part of the drawing instead of a caption pasted on. The price is drawn at display size alongside the name, which converts a commercial detail into a graphic element and removes the last reason to walk closer.

Steal this when

Use this when the thing you sell is a mood rather than a feature, and the buying decision is a cheap impulse made in passing. It is also the right structure any time the price itself is the argument and deserves to be set as large as the brand name.
