E. & A. Mele & C. department store, Naples - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Iconic figure claim.
Define
A single figure, drawn, silhouetted, or posed, is the whole claim. You can read it across a street.
Mechanism
Compression into a body. The figure is not decoration. It is the sentence. Distance-legibility is the test.
Verdict
Poster scale, outdoor, packaging at a glance
Why it works
Cappiello separates the message into two jobs and gives each its own layer: the type block carries the name and the city, the figure carries the feeling, and neither competes for the same space. The grey mannequins are a contrast device, not scenery. They set a dull, colourless field against which the single yellow figure reads as alive, which is how the poster survives being seen sideways from a moving tram. Colour is used as identification rather than description: nothing here is the real colour of anything, so the yellow becomes the store's property.
Steal this when
Use this when the brand name must be legible from a distance but the product itself is unremarkable to look at, such as a store, a category or a service. Put the name in heavy lettering on a flat owned colour, then let one deliberately over-coloured figure do the attracting while dull supporting shapes make it pop.
