Changing the summer footwear of the nation
The pattern
This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.
Define
The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.
Mechanism
Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.
Verdict
We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.
Why it works
This is the credentials ad reduced to its bones: the work is the argument, so the reproduced tear sheet occupies half the spread and the copy shrinks to three sentences. The claim is calibrated to be checkable, since the reader can verify from his own street that summer shoes now appear with straw hats, which makes an enormous assertion about national habit feel like observation rather than boast. Typographically it breaks the house style, swapping the quiet Caslon-ish roman of the earlier ads for a fat display face crossing the gutter, so the spread behaves like a poster in a magazine of grey text. The signature line is restructured from a modest co-operation paragraph into a claim of authorship.
Steal this when
Use this when the work itself is the strongest thing you own and any explanation would dilute it: reproduce the artifact at scale, add one verifiable observation about the change it caused, and sign it. It is also the right format when you want a spread to read as a poster against a text-heavy publication.
