House ad as portfolio

Agency ad: 'Are there definite limits to my market?'

idn.duke.edupublic-domain-us

The pattern

This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.

Define

The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.

Mechanism

Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.

Verdict

We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The headline is the prospect's own private question set in quotation marks, so the reader recognises himself before he knows it is an agency ad. The argument then runs a three-step reframe: state the belief, concede it might be true, then break it with an outside analogy - the automobile industry - before any client story arrives, which removes the defensiveness a direct case study would trigger. The Cutex narrative is told as a plot with a turn, the decision that holding the door open was not enough and new customers must be created, and the payoff is deliberately physical rather than statistical, counting floors rather than dollars. Very short paragraphs and heavy white space make a dense trade argument feel like it can be read standing up.

The big idea

A market's apparent limit is often false: Cutex stopped merely holding the door open, created new customers, and grew from part of one loft to eight floors.

The offer

J. Walter Thompson Company's advertising service. No terms or direct request.

The proof

The Cutex case: growth slackened after four years, then forceful advertising of home manicuring took the factory from part of a Vesey Street loft to eight floors. The published Cutex ad is shown.

Lines from the ad

"Are there definite limits to my market?"
Most people stop when they reach a blank wall.
It was then decided that it wasn't enough just to hold the door open for customers to come in; new customers must be created.

Steal this when

Use this when you sell a service to buyers who have privately concluded their situation cannot improve. Quote their belief as the headline, break it with a neutral third-party example first, then prove it with one named client story ending in a concrete physical result.

The emotion

Written to Frustration. It makes the Say move.

'Most people stop when they reach a blank wall' meets the reader there, then shows which part moved for Cutex: creating new customers, not just holding the door open.
