Agency case-study ad: 'An unseen difference brought to light'
The pattern
This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.
Define
The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.
Mechanism
Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.
Verdict
We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.
Why it works
The copy is built as a question and answer, and the question it asks is the one the prospect's own marketing man has, how do you prove a claim that nobody can see. The circles are the mechanism: three identical frames, one variable, which forces comparison without any instruction. Reproducing the finished ad next to the reasoning lets the reader watch a method turn into an artefact. The closing detail, that the paint moved from barrel lots to small cans, converts a craft story into a commercial result.
The big idea
Barreled Sunlight's smoothness could not be seen, so microscope photographs of three white paints in matching circles turned an invisible claim into visible proof.
The offer
J. Walter Thompson Company's advertising service, shown through eleven years of Barreled Sunlight work. No terms stated.
The proof
Magnified photographs of two ordinary white paints beside Barreled Sunlight. An eleven-year client relationship. The paint moved from barrel lots for industry to small cans for homes.
Lines from the ad
An unseen difference brought to lightBut how could this difference be made more than simply a claim? In each of these circles is a photograph of WHITE PAINTSteal this when
Use this when the product's advantage is technically true and visually absent. Find the instrument that makes it visible, shoot the comparison in identical frames, and let the picture carry the claim the copy is not allowed to assert.
The emotion
Written to Admiration. It makes the Say move.
It walks through the Barreled Sunlight method, microscope photographs of three white paints in matching circles, then gives the result: a paint sold in barrel lots to industry moved into small cans for homes.
