Define
An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.
Mechanism
In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.
Verdict
Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.
Why it works
The poster sells reportage by looking like raw field notes. Leaving the sketches unframed and floating on the bare ground, with no rules or boxes, makes them read as pages from a notebook rather than finished illustration, and the closing italic line names that device out loud so the reader cannot miss it. The red lettering does all the structural work, holding a sequence of four separate messages down a page that has no grid. Crediting writer and artist in equal-weight stacked lines sells the issue as a piece of on-the-ground journalism with two eyewitnesses.
Steal this when
Use this when your proof is that you were actually there and the audience is tired of polished material. Show the working sketches, the raw capture, the unretouched frame, and say in one line that this is what it is.
