The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The ad sells a free thing, so the whole layout is built to transfer fame rather than argue: the sponsor's name appears only inside the programme title, and the star's name gets the largest type on the page. The awning and ticket-card devices import the visual grammar of a theatre bill into a newspaper column, which makes a radio broadcast feel like an event with a curtain time. The body copy is four sentences of mood, not plot - it withholds the story and ends on a hook line rather than a summary, so curiosity is the thing carried to 8 o'clock. Time, station and recurrence are stated three separate times in three different places, which is what small-space broadcast advertising has to do because the reader only needs one fact to act on.

Steal this when

When you are promoting a free, time-bound event whose only real draw is a person, and the sponsor needs to be present without competing with that person for attention.
