Caesar and Cleopatra, by G.B. Shaw ... Hollywood Playhouse
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
The proscenium frame does the genre work - columns plus lintel say classical antiquity and theatre at once, so no illustration of Caesar or Cleopatra is needed and no drawing has to compete with the lettering. Tilting the red placard against that rigid frame is the single deliberate irregularity, and it is what stops the composition being a tombstone. Copy is ruthlessly short - title, author, opening date, venue - because a playbill poster in a walking street has about two seconds, and the date is set in the second largest lettering on the sheet, treating the opening as the news. Four flat screens, one accent of green for the palm, so the eye lands where the designer wants it.
Steal this when
You are announcing an opening date for something whose title already carries all the associations you need. Build a frame that signals the category, tilt one element to break it, and let the date be the second biggest thing on the page.
