The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
Extreme cropping does the work: the instrument is enlarged far past the frame so the viewer identifies it from two f-holes and a bridge alone, which is faster than looking at a whole violin. Reversing the title out of a navy band gives a poster with no photograph a hard anchor at the top, and repeating navy in the instrument ties top and bottom into one composition using a single ink. Letterspacing each headline line to the full column width turns type into architecture - the words become a masthead block, which is how an emergency-relief orchestra gets to look permanent.
Steal this when
Steal the extreme crop when the subject is universally recognised and you want an image that reads at fifty feet. Steal the reversed full-measure headline block when a new or temporary institution needs to look established on its first appearance.
