Why it works
The quantity is encoded twice, as a numeral and as a countable group, so the abstract symbol is anchored to something the child can physically tally. The groups are broken into rows of two and three, which lets the eye subitise small rows rather than count fourteen birds one at a time. The silhouettes are identical and detail-free, removing every variable except number, and the mint ground with a single blue accent keeps the figures as the only thing to look at. The chart states no instruction at all - the layout is the lesson.
Steal this when
Use this when a number will not be believed or understood until the audience can count the things behind it - headcount, units sold, days lost. It is the right structure whenever you want the reader to arrive at the answer themselves rather than be told it.
