Why it works
Binding the two cartes on one sheet is the argument: identical encoding, identical width rule, two campaigns, and the reader is invited to compare the shape of attrition across them without being told to. Within each carte the band's width is the only quantitative mark, so the graphic carries no redundant furniture - no axes, no gridlines, no frame around the geography. The portfolio context shapes the design: as part of a numbered collection each plate has to stand alone, which is why every scale rule and every source sits inside the sheet.
Steal this when
Copy the pairing move when you want a single case study to read as a rule - put a second, older case beside it on the same scale and let the reader draw the generalisation. Also the model for any deck plate that must survive being pulled out of the deck and circulated on its own.
