The pattern

This still is filed under Data as proof.

Define

A chart, map, or count that is the argument, not an illustration next to the argument.

Mechanism

Sighted evidence. The reader is asked to believe their eyes: a bar, a share, a spread on a map.

Verdict

The claim is comparative or quantitative and the figure can be read without a caption doing the sell.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The same blue does double duty in map and pictogram block, so the reader binds category to colour once and reads both halves with one key. Setting the figures in columns rather than scattering them converts a ratio into a shape, and the four-to-one block is graspable before the labels are read. The part-figure at the bottom left shows a fractional unit by cutting the symbol rather than shrinking it, which preserves the rule that size never varies. Putting the map above the count answers the sceptic's question, which countries are in this, without breaking the simplicity of the count below.

Steal this when

Use this when a share-of-total claim will be doubted, and you need the count and the membership definition on the same page: block of units for the ratio, map or list above it to show exactly what was counted.
