The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Read the pattern

Why it works

It refuses the abstraction of the word consumer and replaces it with one named household observed at a fixed hour. Everything is specific and nothing is evaluative: the dish towels are rinsed and hung, the cereal is in the fireless cooker, the husband has spent three quarters of an hour on the paper. That inventory establishes the reader's real state of attention before any point is made about how she reads an advertisement, so the argument arrives already grounded. The economic details are dropped flat, without comment, which lets the staff reader draw the buying-power conclusion himself.

Steal this when

Use this when a team is writing to a demographic instead of a person. Write the target's evening as a scene, at a specific hour, with objects rather than adjectives, before anyone writes a line of copy.
