Are You a Bromide?
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
Naming the format in the first line disarms the reader's defence: once you are in on the joke you stop discounting the claims and start enjoying them, which lets the copy run at a pitch no sincere blurb could survive. The invented endorser is the real mechanism - Miss Belinda Blurb in the act of blurbing gives the puff a face and a caption, which is exactly how testimonial advertising works, exposed and mocked in the same stroke. The deflation keeps it funny rather than smug: a book billed as a ninety-horsepower six-cylinder seller expects to sell three hundred and fifty copies. This jacket is the origin of the word blurb itself.
Steal this when
Reach for this when your category's advertising conventions are so worn that the audience discounts them before reading - the parody buys attention the sincere version cannot. It only works if the joke is aimed at your own side of the counter: mock the format, never the customer.
