The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The joke is carried by the setting, not the drawing. Gavarni puts the two speakers in front of a poster column so the reader understands, before reading a word, that these men are getting their information from advertising. The punchline turns on a single word with two meanings, troupe as theatre company and troupe de ligne as line infantry, so the man answers confidently and wrongly, which is the point about advertising literacy. Backs-to-viewer staging makes the reader a fourth person in the street, overhearing rather than being addressed.
Steal this when
Use this structure when you want to mock a medium by showing someone using it badly, rather than by arguing against it. Put the target medium in the background as scenery and let two ordinary people misuse it in one exchange.
