Celebrity endorsement

What I Think of Pelmanism - By Judge Ben B. Lindsey" (Mid-Week Pictorial, Sept 9 1926)

The pattern

This still is filed under Celebrity endorsement.

Define

A named, recognizable person lends their reputation to the claim. The name is the proof.

Mechanism

Transferred authority. The reader believes the person first, the product second. Fame or office does the work a peer testimonial does not.

Verdict

The endorser is actually known to the buyer

Why it works

Editorial mimicry: the headline is a byline, the grid is a three-column article and the type matches the magazine, so the reader is a paragraph deep before it registers as advertising. The advertiser's own selling copy is quarantined into the final column under the word Note, which keeps the borrowed authority uncontaminated by claims and keeps the judge's voice clean. The boxed pull quote repeats the single mechanism worth remembering, that these qualities are results and not gifts, so even a skimmer leaves with the argument. The coupon converts the credibility into a name and address on the spot.

Steal this when

When you have a credible third party who will put their name to a first-person piece: run their article as the ad, keep your own offer, proof and coupon out of their voice, and let a Note paragraph do the selling. Still the cleanest structure for authority-led lead generation.
