The pattern

This still is filed under Celebrity endorsement.

Define

A named, recognizable person lends their reputation to the claim. The name is the proof.

Mechanism

Transferred authority. The reader believes the person first, the product second. Fame or office does the work a peer testimonial does not.

Verdict

The endorser is actually known to the buyer

Read the pattern

Why it works

The endorsement is framed as self-interest rather than vanity: complexion is sold as social influence, which gives the reader a respectable reason to want it. Using a drawn portrait rather than a photograph keeps the subject slightly idealised and makes the page read as editorial illustration instead of advertising. The was-an-American-girl opening builds an explicit ladder the reader can imagine climbing, which is the whole mechanism of the campaign. The instruction passage is written in second person imperatives with sensory payoffs, so the reader rehearses the routine while reading it.

Steal this when

Use this when your buyer needs permission to want a status product. Give the benefit a functional justification, use an endorser who visibly started where the reader is now, and write the how-to in second person so the reader is already doing it.
