Mrs. Marshall Field urges women to give their skin the wisest care.
The pattern
This still is filed under Celebrity endorsement.
Define
A named, recognizable person lends their reputation to the claim. The name is the proof.
Mechanism
Transferred authority. The reader believes the person first, the product second. Fame or office does the work a peer testimonial does not.
Verdict
The endorser is actually known to the buyer
Why it works
Replacing the endorser's face with her drawing room is the interesting decision. It sells position instead of looks, which sidesteps the awkwardness of an older society matron being held up as a beauty and lets the reader covet the life rather than the face. The crossheads split the page into a status half and an instruction half, so the copy can be skimmed as advice. The cleansing passage uses a physical demonstration the reader performs on herself, looking at the dirt on the cloth, which manufactures proof at home instead of asserting it in the ad.
Steal this when
Use this when your endorser's authority comes from taste, rank or experience rather than from looking the part. Show the world they built rather than their face, and give the reader one self-administered demonstration that proves the product worked before she has bought anything.
