Roycroft Leather-Book: A Catalog of Beautiful Leathern Things
The pattern
This still is filed under Risk reversal.
Define
The cost of being wrong moves from the buyer to the seller. The buyer can try. The seller eats the failure.
Mechanism
Inverse risk. A trial, a refund, a pay-after-it-works clause. Distinct from a guarantee stack: here the whole bet is flipped, not itemized.
Verdict
The main objection is what if it does not work for me
Why it works
The catalog puts a provenance story in front of the price list, so by the time the reader reaches a card-case at two dollars he is buying a Moorish art revived in Venice rather than a wallet. Scarcity is built from the production method instead of asserted, because handwork means no duplicates and that argument is then aimed straight at the gift buyer. The terms page does the hardest work: it demands cash with order, gives the reason (margins are thin and output limited), and immediately neutralises the risk with a refund granted without question or correspondence, so the demand reads as candour rather than as a condition.
Steal this when
You are asking for payment up front on a handmade, limited or made-to-order product. State the reason for the terms in the same breath as the terms, then kill the risk with a refund promise plain enough that nobody has to read it twice.
