The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Read the pattern

Why it works

It teaches by decomposition and then by sequence. Fourteen named brush strokes reduce an intimidating craft to a finite list, and once the list is finite the reader believes the thing is learnable. The figures then show the same card at four stages on one page, so the reader sees process rather than result and can locate his own work in it. The selling chapter reframes the whole trade from decoration to persuasion - lettering is called a third of the job and selling force the other two thirds - which raises the reader's ceiling and, not incidentally, his prices. Pricing is given as arithmetic with a floor and a rule, so the beginner is handed a script for the one conversation he will handle worst. The back-matter supply advertisement then monetises the trust the 200 pages of teaching just built.

Steal this when

Steal this when you are selling a skill as a livelihood and the buyer's real objection is that he cannot picture himself doing it - a course, a certification, a trade book, a paid community. The moves to copy are the finite named list of primitives early on, the same artefact photographed at four stages of completion, and a chapter that tells the learner exactly what to charge.
