The pattern

This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.

Define

The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.

Mechanism

Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.

Verdict

We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The introduction borrows an unrelated authority: Shakespeare is recast as a trade-mark for good literature, so the abstract idea of accumulated reputation lands before a single legal term appears. It then hands the reader a test to run himself, asking the women around him to name the standard talcum powder, and withholds the brand name so the reader must finish the argument in his own head. The body turns statute into narrative by attaching every rule to a named applicant who lost, which is why a legal digest stays readable. As an agency lead piece it never claims expertise, it performs it, and the branch-office list on the title page is the only selling the booklet does.

Steal this when

Steal this when you sell an invisible professional service and need to be found rather than to pitch: a genuinely useful free reference on a problem your buyer already has puts your name on his shelf for years. Also steal the structure when you must make a technical or legal subject readable for a lay buyer without dumbing it down.
