The Art of Lettering
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
The book dissects before it demonstrates. Plate 4 labels the parts of a letter with call-out lines, so the student is given vocabulary before he is asked to draw anything, and the applied chapter of finished title pages and inscriptions comes only after the anatomy, the pens and the alphabets. Crediting every applied plate to a named artist converts a picture collection into a roster of authorities and lends their standing to the instruction. The heavy ruled border on every text page fixes an identical margin across the whole book, so prose and plates read as one system rather than text with pictures dropped into it.
Steal this when
Use this sequence when teaching a craft where students will copy before they understand: name the parts with labelled diagrams first, then graded exercises, then real work by named practitioners doing the thing for a real purpose. It is also the right shape for a reference product that has to keep earning its shelf space after the course ends.
