Selling by Mail: Principles and Practice
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
Pratt teaches by specimen rather than by assertion: every principle is immediately followed by a photographed piece of real mail that embodies it, so the reader gets the rule and the artifact in the same eye movement. The captions do the persuading - each one names the single device at work in that plate, which turns a picture into a lesson. The book is ordered as the job is actually done, from market analysis through list, copy, catalog, letter, follow-up, order blank and collections, so it doubles as a checklist rather than a set of essays. Because the author withholds exact costs and returns on grounds of client confidence, the reader gets mechanism without the numbers that would date fastest.
Steal this when
Use this structure when you are documenting a repeatable acquisition system for people who have never run one: order the chapters by the sequence of the actual work, and pin every rule to a reproduced specimen with a caption that names the one device it demonstrates. It is also the right model for an internal playbook where you must teach a method without exposing client numbers.
