Modern Business Writing: Principles Underlying Effective Advertisements and Business Letters
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
The book's real device is the block quotation. Every principle is asserted in one paragraph and then immediately paid off with a real ad or letter set in a different measure, so the reader never has to take the rule on faith - the specimen is the argument. Raymond also refuses the usual split between advertising and correspondence and files the adjustment letter, the credit letter and the collection letter under selling, which forces every routine touch to carry a re-sell. The specimen ads demonstrate what he is teaching: the Savage rifle page opens mid-action with a charging grizzly and withholds the product until the third paragraph, which is his short-circuit appeal working in front of you.
Steal this when
Reach for this structure when you are writing a teaching asset - a playbook, a training deck, an internal standard - and you need people to actually change how they write. Assert one rule, then show one real piece that obeys it, and set the example visually apart so the rule and the receipt never blur.
