Business Writing: Articles, House Organs, Reports, Advertisements
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
The book teaches by contrast rather than by assertion. Hall stages an argument between a publicity man's secretary and a visiting writer, has the writer sit down at the typewriter and produce the item, then prints the item in full and lets the secretary object to it, so the reader absorbs the rule of writing to news value while watching a fight rather than reading a principle. The typographic split between instruction and specimen makes that possible on the page. The exhibits are all identified by company, which converts advice into evidence and lets the reader go check the original.
Steal this when
Use this shape when you are teaching a skill to people who already have a neighbouring one, and the fastest route is to show a real artefact, then name the one decision inside it. Also the right model when your instruction must survive being skimmed: keep the teaching and the example in visibly different type so a reader can enter at any page.
