Business Letters, How to Write Them
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
The book teaches by wrong-then-right pairing rather than by rule alone. The adjustment chapter prints the defensive reply that blames the express company in full, lets the reader feel it, then prints the two-sentence Wanamaker reply that ships a replacement without asking for proof, and closes by naming the mechanism: the customer's word was accepted as proof. Setting every specimen in typewriter face means the student is looking at the finished artifact, not a description of it, so the lesson transfers to the machine on his desk. The front half clears mechanics out of the way, punctuation, titles, figures, folding, which lets the back half be purely about persuasion and run the attention, interest, desire, action spine without competing with grammar.
Steal this when
You are writing a house style guide or an onboarding doc for a team that answers customers in writing. Print the bad reply in full, then the reply that was actually sent, then the result it produced, instead of listing tone rules.
