Applied Business Correspondence
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
Watson never states a principle without immediately showing the artifact. The alternation is mechanical - rule in body type, then a boxed letter reproduced exactly as the reader received it, then the analysis of why that letter pulled or failed. Because the panels are typeset as typewritten letters rather than quoted as prose, the student judges them the way a prospect would, at a glance, which is the only test that matters. The second mechanism is naming: Big Idea, features, stopper, attention-ray, the load, the six motives (love, gain, duty, pride, self-indulgence, self-preservation). A named checklist turns persuasion from a talent into a selection problem, and a selection problem can be taught, delegated and audited. Third, the failures are shown alongside the winners, so the reader learns the diagnostic and not just the template.
Steal this when
Steal this structure when you are writing a playbook or training document meant to change how a team works, not to be admired: pair every rule with a real artifact pulled from your own files, and show the version that failed next to the one that paid. It is also the right model for a course-to-book conversion, where exposition has to stand alone but the application sections stay skippable.
