Define

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.
Verdict
Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.
Why it works
Palette Scrapings is a column built from short unlinked paragraphs divided by ornaments, which lets an editor publish continuously without a feature and gives the reader a dozen separate entry points on one page. The specimen-plus-verdict caption turns an illustration into an argument: the show card is not described, it is judged in one line that names the buyer it will stop. The competition machinery does three jobs at once, generating free artwork, generating named winners who become readers, and generating a reason to buy the next issue, and the published judges' report converts a giveaway into a teaching document. Reproducing 1812 playbills beside 1900 posters quietly extends the collecting category backwards and gives a young field a lineage.
Steal this when
Copy this when you run a trade publication or newsletter that must ship on a fixed date with no guaranteed big story: a standing column of short divided notes absorbs whatever arrives. Copy the competition-plus-published-judgement structure when you want an audience to submit work and to keep coming back for the verdict.
