Exhibit in the column

The Poster: an illustrated monthly chronicle, vol. 1, nos. 1-6 - bound volume

The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The page is built for scanning, not reading: the bold side-head carries the subject out of the column so a collector can run a finger down the page and stop at the one title he cares about, while the run-around keeps the copy tight around it. Every reproduction is captioned with the artist's name and the exact sheet size, which turns a picture into a catalogue record and quietly teaches the reader that posters have provenance and dimensions, the two things a collectable needs. The criticism picks a fixed enemy, the English lithographic printer, and consistently absolves the designer, which gives a trade magazine a cause and gives its designer-readers a reason to feel defended in print.

Steal this when

Copy this when you are building a recurring review or roundup that must hold dozens of unrelated short items and stay scannable: side-heads out of the column, asterisms instead of rules, a fixed caption formula under every image. Copy the caption formula in particular when you want readers to treat your subject as a category with records rather than a pile of pictures.
