The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Rogers sets a plain text face at a modest size and spends the whole budget on paper and margin, so the page reads as valuable without a single ornament to pay for. The only display moment in the book is the half-title, and holding it back makes the title monumental by contrast with the quiet pages that follow. Slater's argument uses the same restraint: he opens by reversing what the reader assumes, then spends the essay proving the reversal with dates and names instead of adjectives. The colophon converts production facts into status, telling the buyer precisely what he is holding and how few others hold it.

Steal this when

Reach for this when the budget is small but the piece must still read as premium: one text face, one display moment, generous margin, and a closing colophon of real production facts. Steal the opening move separately whenever your reader already believes the opposite of your thesis.
