Lady Clairol Creme Hair Lightener ad, Modern Screen January 1960
The pattern
This still is filed under Question headline.
Define
The first line is a question the reader was already asking, or one they cannot leave unanswered.
Mechanism
Open loop plus recognition. A good question is the reader's objection, spoken first by us.
Verdict
We know the real objection and can answer it in the next breath.
Why it works
The same headline is reused with a new proof scene, which is how a campaign compounds: the question is already familiar so the picture only has to supply fresh evidence. Seasonal casting does the heavy lifting again, moving the promise from spring fairground to winter sport, so the claim reads as year-round rather than a one-off. The pivot line, hair responds to Lady Clairol like a man responds to blondes, welds the product mechanic and the social payoff into one sentence, which is the whole selling idea compressed. Closing on try it and see keeps the ask at experiment size instead of commitment size.
Steal this when
You already have a headline that works and need the next execution rather than a new idea. Keep the line, the type and the layout fixed, and change only the proof scene and the one sentence that ties mechanic to payoff.
