Why it works
The mark is built as a closed circle, which is what a wreath is, and a closed form reads as a seal rather than a picture, so it survives being stamped small on a chest or a caddy. The crown device converts an ordinary superlative into an image, so the brand never has to write the word best. Splitting the jobs keeps them from fighting: the crown carries the feeling, the black lozenge carries the grade, and the shopper and the buyer each take what they came for. The surrounding registration sheet is itself the lesson, showing how much apparatus a nineteenth-century mark needed before it could be defended.
