Mark as compressed claim

Ex libris van Ernst Heinrich Krelage

The pattern

This still is filed under Mark as compressed claim.

Define

The mark itself is the sentence: a monogram, a seal, a device that already means the claim.

Mechanism

Compression. Years of use, or a very sharp first use, load the device so it can appear without copy.

Verdict

The mark is already loaded, or we will spend to load it

Why it works

The bookplate does its work by depiction rather than assertion: the candle, the open folio and the tulip on the sill say scholar and bulb-grower without a word of description, so the label characterises the owner while it identifies him. Confining everything to black line at small scale keeps it legible when printed by the hundred and pasted by hand, and the strict top-and-bottom caps hold the busy engraving inside a stable frame. The result is a personal identity mark built to be repeated across an entire library, which is exactly what a mark has to survive.

Steal this when

Use this structure for any personal or small-house identity mark that must be applied to many items at small size: fix the name top and bottom in one typographic voice and let a single dense line vignette between them carry the character. It is the right model when what you own or make is a body of things rather than one thing.
