Montgomery Ward & Co. Catalog, 'Golden Jubilee,' Fall-Winter 1922-1923 (cover)
The pattern
This still is filed under Mail-order catalog.
Define
A catalog that is the store: browse, choose, order, without a clerk and often without a website.
Mechanism
Assortment as argument. Density, numbering, and an order path do the closing. The book is the funnel.
Verdict
We have a range, remote buyers, and a way to take the order on the same object.
Why it works
The cover solves the standing problem of a heritage claim, that age reads as obsolescence, by putting the past and the present in the same glance: a stagecoach filling the page and a train, car and aeroplane in a small inset above it. The reader gets founding romance and current capability without either cancelling the other. Pioneers Together is the second move, splitting the credit so the customer is given the same status as the company, which turns a corporate milestone into something the reader can feel proud of rather than sold at. Compared with the Spring issue's all-type policy statement, this one argues the same fifty years entirely through a picture.
Steal this when
Use this for an anniversary where the risk is looking old-fashioned: lead with the founding image at full scale, then place a small, unmistakably current image in the same frame. The shared-credit line is worth stealing whenever a milestone belongs as much to your customers as to you.
