Vrouw met pakket kijkt naar man in kroeg
The pattern
This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.
Define
The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.
Mechanism
Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.
Verdict
A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed
Why it works
The composition argues by distance and direction: the idle man is large and near, the cost is small, distant and centred in the doorway, and the eye is walked from cause to consequence in one move. The title is withheld until below the image, so the reader assembles the accusation before it is stated. Keeping the bar in shadow with only a pouring hand visible makes drink a nameless force rather than a villain the viewer can dismiss.
Steal this when
Use this frame when you need a consequence to land without lecturing: put the person responsible in the foreground doing nothing, put the cost in the background visibly happening, and let a single short title close the loop.
